To me this is an exploit, the having a companion lock them with conversation, same as running. You can even have an ally talking to the merchants, to make it stupidly easy(unless people are counting that as an exploit?). More than enough time to get a good distance, or transfer the items to your other party members. After you steal, you have a few seconds to run away before they even start looking for you. Thievery is always good, whether you are stealing from enemies, or merchants. I never knew of any exploit, nor do I see the need for any kind of exploit to be abused.
